In almost the words of Senator Simon, ‘Gee it’ll be great to be back home. Home is where I want to be’. I don’t mean to be ungrateful; touring Western Europe has been unforgettable – but they’re nothing like us. They’re still obsessed with oil, it feels like they’re stuck in the 70s.
First thing I noticed was the smell – engine fumes and cigarettes. Health is barely an issue here. You have to get way clear of the cities to smell fresh air. And then they have coal-powered power stations poisoning the countryside.
At least I’ll be able to explain to people back home why West Germany joined the USSR. They had the only significant green party in Europe. They had to join the Clean Energy Race somehow.
They think I’m crazy when I talk about the commercial value of lightening strikes and architecturally encouraged static electricity. I’ve stopped even trying to explain kinetic energy harvesting.
On an individual basis I can relate to some of them. But en mass they don’t seem worried about the implications of using a finite energy source. Some students are predicting a war – invading Saudi Arabia to seize their oilfields. Who the hell needs a huge desert full of poisonous black goo? Well I’m glad we don’t.
See you soon. Love, Brad.
